Craving some slider deliciousness, but don’t feel like driving to a restaurant or suffering the tedium of assembling them yourself? This is your answer! Because the beef or turkey is cooked crumbled, you don’t have the work of flipping dozens of little burgers; but finishing the sliders off in the oven is what elevates this recipe to magical. Maybe magical is a bit of an exaggeration, but it is smart time management to make these up to a day ahead of time and keep them in the fridge until you are ready to pop them in the oven. Perfect for a busy weeknight or especially a party.
A tip for good presentation is searing the meat. Basically, heat your pan to medium high heat and place your meat in it as a whole block. Sprinkle it with the seasonings.
When it is nicely seared, flip it over in one piece to sear the other side.
Crumble it to finish cooking, adding your onions and garlic.
One last tip: easiest assembly comes from leaving the rolls “stuck” together in a sheet. The first time I made this, I used just twelve rolls, but they really didn’t fill up a 9×13 pan and left me trying to balance the meat to the edge. Now I buy an extra bag of rolls and fill in the gaps. There is more than enough meat for this.
No need to put yourself through this balancing act.
INGREDIENTS
1 lb extra lean ground beef or turkey
1 tsp sea salt
1 tsp ground black pepper
1 tsp cumin
1 tsp dry mustard
1/2 tsp smoked paprika
1 cup diced onions
3 gloves garlic, minced
1 (10 oz) can Ro-Tel Diced Tomatoes and Green Chiles, drained
12 slices of your favorite cheese, I like cheddar
2 packages of Original Hawaiian Sweet Rolls
4 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon prepared brown mustard
1 tablespoon sesame seeds (black, white, or both)
DIRECTIONS
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Coat a 9x13 baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.
Heat a skillet on the stovetop to medium high heat. Place block of meat in it to sear.
Sprinkle with salt and next 4 spices. Flip meat whole after about 4 minutes to sear the other side.
Once seared, crumble meat and add onion and garlic.Cook until no longer pink.
Remove from heat and add drained tomatoes stirring until well combined.
Slice rolls into top and bottom halves.
Place bottom halves in the baking dish using as many as necessary to cover the bottom.
Top with meat mixture and cheese slices. Finish off with top halves of buns.
For the glaze, melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
Once melted, whisk in remaining ingredients until smooth and combined. Pour over buns.
At this point you can either cover and refrigerate for up to a day or bake uncovered for about 25 minutes.
Using a knife, cut into individual sliders to serve.
